Please note: This online exhibition is currently being uploaded to this website. The finished exhibition can be viewed here on this website and at Low Wood Bay from October the 24 2026.
The current exhibition in the Atrium at Low Wood Bay, Windermere, spotlights the work of the North Yorkshire based painter Tony Roberts.
Tony Roberts trained in Fine Art Painting at Hornsey College of Arts London (1954-1959), and at the Royal Academy Schools (1959-1962), where the teaching emphasised drawing and traditional materials and techniques.
Originally from Enfield, North London, Tony first visited the North of England in 1958.
He moved from London to Northwest England in 1962 to take up teaching positions at Bolton College of Art and then at Manchester Metropolitan University (then Manchester Regional College of Art and later Polytechnic) where he taught painting for twenty-seven years.
Since 1978 he has lived in The Yorkshire Dales, where he has a studio in a converted Victorian Sunday School.
This exhibition at Low Wood is divided into two parts. The larger of the paintings in the exhibition, are still life studies with flowers. The lilies and orchids take centre stage in these large works. The paintings are oil paint on canvas or board.
Landscape Paintings in Watercolour and Gouache
The rugged landscape of Northern England is an enduring theme in Tony’s work, the upland Pennine landscape, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District.
Tony moved from London to live in the North West of England in 1962.
Mountain Landscape and Water
Great Gable from Scafell Pike. There are a number of watercolours of the Lake District landscape – the mountains and also a desire to capture the shifting colour of water in his abstract paintings of Windermere.
Ribblehead
The landscape of the Yorkshire Dales features in many of the works on paper in the exhibition. Tony lives in High Bentham and the limestone scenery close to his home is seen in works such as Drumlins at Ribblehead or Bridleway Austwick.
Hidden Places
There are two small paintings which shine a light on areas which could easily be overlooked. One is a painting of a spiders web – painted in watercolour and white ink, a companion painting to this is the mystical “Spiders web with crescent moon.”
