Residency in Ireland:
Katharine Holmes
In the autumn of 2011, landscape artist, Katharine Holmes spent a month long residency in Kilkenny Ireland, as part of a Chrysalis Arts project, and then travelled west to spend time on the coast of North Mayo.
Before she went to Ireland, Katharine who is based in Malham, North Yorkshire said of this planned visit:
“I know very little about Kilkenny and its landscape and I am not sure at all what work I will make. When I made a brief visit this summer to the area where I will be based I was struck by the friendliness of those I spoke to, my starting point and way in to the landscape will be through the people who live there.
I imagine I will work on drawings, I have packed lots of paper and inks and drawing materials.
Two years ago I made a series of drawings entitled:
‘A journey around Home’, which was exhibited as part of the exhibition: A Malham Family of Painters, and explored the return to my roots and a very familiar place.
In Kilkenny I will be a stranger seeing things from the outside and listening to those who call it home. I hope to send back to Mary Gavagan at Linton Court Gallery several : ‘Letters from Ireland’ which will record in a visual form what I experience.
These Visual ‘Letters from Ireland’ can be viewed below.
