Chris Rigby lives in Burton in Lonsdale, North Yorkshire and studied illustration at Falmouth School of Art in Cornwall.

During his time in Falmouth he states that he:

‘developed an interest in the techniques of the old masters, I realized this was the foundation for much of what I was taught in illustration, through the Old Masters I sought what I saw as the source.’

His painting ‘Cut Throat Rock’, a large oil painting of rocks off the coast of the Iveragh peninsula in County Kerry Ireland, won first prize last year in Kendal’s ‘Open Up North Exhibiton’ which was held at various venues in the town including the Abbot Hall Gallery.

The West coast of Ireland is a place Chris has painted many times and a number of paintings of the area feature in the Linton Court Gallery’s exhibition, the first of the new season.

Various island locations from Shetland to the Isles of Scilly, as well as the West Coast of Ireland are the subject of many of the paintings.

Working in both watercolour and oil he has painted seascapes of calm water at dusk to rough seas beneath high towering cliffs.

Chris has returned to Tresco on the Isles of Scilly many times over the years and its subtropical coast bathed in a strong light feature in many works.

Closer to home other paintings are of the grassy slopes of the high peaks of the Lake District and Howgill fells.
