Norman Adams 1927 - 2005

Norman Adams RA was born in Walthamstow, north east London in 1927. He trained at the Harrow School of Art and at the Royal College of Art. In 1962 he became Head of Painting at Manchester College of Art and was Professor of Fine Art at Newcastle University from 1981-1985. In 1967 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy. He became a Royal Academician in 1972 and was Keeper of the RA Schools from 1986 until his retirement in 1995.

Whatever the medium I feel you've got to use it properly. I love the language of paint, the pure abstract aesthetics of the medium. My paintings exist in between abstract and representational. They have a visual symbolic language. I feel a painting should have a strong message; a painting has to say something. It is not permissible to say nothing.
