The Landscape of Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria:
The geology of these three northern counties which has dramatically shaped the landscape, has also greatly influenced the art produced by artists who live and work there. The Linton Court Gallery’s winter exhibition features work by a number of artists from each county, some established as landscape artists, others who are lesser known.
Linton Court is situated beneath the limestone outcrop of Castleberg Crag, close to the distinctive landscape of Malham, an area which has inspired artists for hundreds of years. The magnificent limestone landscape of Gordale Scar, at the northern end of the Craven Fault, inspired the British romantic painter, James Ward (1769 - 1859) in 1812, to paint “Gordale Scar”, Tate Gallery, London. In the twentieth century, the artist John Piper (1903 - 1992) made paintings and drawings during the 1940s of this dramatic natural feature.
The area continues to inspire artists living and working in the area, a number of them are included in this exhibition : Frank Gordon, Margaret Uttley and Katharine Holmes.
Frank who is originally from Lancashire, now lives in Giggleswick and is exhibiting drawings and paintings of Ribblesdale. Margaret Uttley is exhibiting fine drawings of the limestone landscape of the Craven area and Katharine Holmes, who recently had a large exhibition at the gallery has a number of works of the Malham landscape on show.
Other painters include:
Debbie Loane - from the market town of Easingwold, just north of York has a number of drawings and paintings on display, featuring the North York Moors and the North Pennine region.
Karen Lloyd - and Phil Morsman are two artists based in Cumbria. Karen works from her studio in Kendal and Phil from his base in Appleby-in-Westmorland.
Michael Bennett - work is to be found in the collections at Kettle’s Yard Cambridge and Wakefield Art Gallery was formerly Head of art at Bretton College Yorkshire. The paintings Michael is exhibiting in this exhibition are inspired by the poet Norman Nicholson and feature the Cumbrian fell Black Combe.
